Daily Math Assignments
Number of the Day: Students know that there are 180 days in the school year and each day they count towards that number using the number of the day. Students choose 10 ways to represent the number. "Ways to Represent Numbers" (below) gives more info on how we do this.
Counting Collections: Students should count groups of items (buttons, crayons, shells, cards, etc. Group, record, and use a number sentence.
Make it easy using blank counting collection sheets!
Word Problems: These are listed by week under resources and downloads. See photos in slideshow below of classroom charts related to some of these strategies.

Play Math Games for Fun!
We highly encourage any math games to be played at home. Card games such as salute and make 10 are lots of fun. Race to zero or race to 120 are fun too! Let your child teach you.
Race to 120 instructions... player one rolls the dice and adds together the total of both dice (rolls 5, and 4, total is 9) Player one moves 9 forwards from 0 (moves to 9). Then its player two's turn. Player two rolls 2 dice (say 5 and 6 so moves 11 and lands on 11. This continues until you get to 120. If a player lands right on 120 they win. If a player rolls too many and would land past 120 then they automatically lose. Have fun!
Salute instructions... 3 players.... one is the general. Split the deck evenly between 2 players. The general says salute. The 2 players each put a card on their forehead but they don't know what it is. The general says the total or the 2 cards. Player one can see player two's forehead card so knowing the total (say 10) and knowing that the other player's card says 6, then they shout 4! Whoever says the right answer of the card on their forehead first is the winner of that round and they get both cards. Keep playing in this way. Whatever player has the most cards by the end is the winner.
Race to zero instructions... player one rolls the dice and adds together the total of both dice (rolls 5, and 4, total is 9) Player one moves 9 backwards from 120 (moves to 111). Then its player two's turn. Player two rolls 2 dice (say 5 and 6 so moves 11 and lands on 109. This continues until you get to zero. If a player lands right on zero they win. If a player rolls too many and would land past zero then they automatically lose. Have fun!
Make ten instructions.... To play make ten you need a deck of cards and 2 players. Split the deck in half. Each player lays out 5 cards face up. You want to end up with the most cards at the end to win. Players make ten using their upward facing cards, using more cards is better! For example if you have 10, 1, 9, 6, 4 (that would be great luck!) You can make 10 in any way. You would say 6+4 is ten then I take my 10 and minus it to get zero, then add the 9 card and the 1 card to get back to 10. This way you used all 5 cards and get to keep it in your pile of winnings to count at the end. OR you could just use the 10, or the 10 and the 0 or any combination, but you want to use as many cards in each round as you can. Subtraction and addition and any combo of those are allowed.
Dice Game: Make 10
A game for 2 players Materials: 1 die and 1 coin
One die version: One die is rolled. Players try to find what number needs to be added to make ten. The number needed to make ten becomes the player’s score for that round. If a "3" is rolled, then a player would say 7 to make a 10 and their score is 7.
Record your score on the score sheet.
Flip a coin:
"Heads"= high score wins that round
"Tails"=low score wins that round
Circle the winner of that round.
CHALLENGE: (Only play this version if the "One die" version is too easy for your child.)Two dice version: Two dice are rolled. Players must add or subtract to make a ten. If two sixes are rolled. 6 + 6 = 12 so 12 – 2 = 10 so 2 is the score.
