Mentor Sentences: Step by Step
A mentor sentence is an excerpt from a read aloud we read in class. The assignment has 4 parts. Students complete one each day.
Monday: What do you notice? This part has no wrong answers! The kids make a note of anything they notice… periods, capitals, spelling patterns, anything.; Tuesday: Parts of Speech The students identify nouns, verbs, adjectives… we circle them by color, so nouns are blue, verbs are purple, adjectives are green. Note: Some sentences may not have adjectives and some might have several. Wednesday: Revise The students may replace any of the crossed out words by writing a word above it that would still make sense… mostly synonyms Thursday: Make it a Silly Sentence! The kids can come up with something silly complete the sentence, like a Mad Lib activity. They must still replace a noun with noun, a verb with a verb, and an adjective with an adjective. |
