Building Good Reading Habits (September)
Objectives:
Reading Partners Work Together:
- Readers take a sneak peek to get ready to read.
- Readers do something at the end of the book-(look back at favorite parts, tell someone about it, retell it to yourself).
- Readers get stronger by reading more and more and keeping track of what they read.
- Readers set goals to read all day long.
- Readers reread to make their reading voices smoother.
- Readers track with their eyes and scoop up more words.
- When readers reread they see more!
- Readers sneak a peek at the pictures to figure out the words.
- Readers drop bad habits and pick up good habits (the freeze, the tell me, the blooper, the mumble).
- Readers look at all parts of the word.
- Readers use meaning to figure out words.
- Readers double check their meaning.
- Readers don't give up. They try, try again.
- Try it 2 ways (flip that sound).
- Readers celebrate and set new goals.
Reading Partners Work Together:
- We work as a team.
- We build good habits together.
- We read together.
- We give reminders.
- We grow ideas together.
- Introduce books to each other
- Partners dont tell they help.
- Partners can do something at the end too!
Word Detectives Unit (October and November)
1. Be on the lookout for tricky words.
2. Look closely at words to solve them.
3. Readers use everything they know to solve tricky words.
4. Do a SLOW check.
5. Reading partners work together.
6. Practice snap (sight) words.
7. Use snap words as clues to other words.
8. Use snap words to solve similar tricky words.
9. Turn new words into snap words.
10. Scoop up more words to smooth out their reading.
11. Readers break words into parts.
12. Pay special attention to the beginnings of words.
13. Break off word endings.
14. Look out for vowel teams.
15. Use parts of words you know.
16. Watch out for unusual words (like contractions)
17. Readers smooth out their reading.
